The Top 10 Questions You NEED To Ask If Your Website Isn’t Generating Any Sales

Imagine: After months of hard work, your website is finally live. You’ve officially been open for business an entire week. And yet you haven’t made any sales.

Not. One. Single. Sale.

Ugh!

Don’t despair. We’ve all been there. In fact, this is one of the most common problems new Internet entrepreneurs ask me to solve for them.

Here’s something that’ll help ease the pain of turning a “dud” site into one that rakes in the profits: Warren Little’s surefire “Why My Website Isn’t Making Money!” troubleshooting checklist.

If you recently launched a website and aren’t getting the results you expected, you need to ask yourself every single question on the list below, starting with number one. Once you can answer “yes” to all 10 questions, I guarantee the sales will come rolling in.

1. Is there actually a market for your product?

By that I mean are you POSITIVE you’re selling a product or solution people are actively looking for online – and not finding? That’s the formula for a successful Internet business. And that’s the first question you should answer … even before you set up a website.

The best way to do that is with keyword research. (My favorite keyword research tools are Keyword Discovery and BeBiz .)

2. Are you getting enough traffic?

If you’ve had only 100 visitors and haven’t made a sale, be patient. Before you can begin to assess your website’s effectiveness, you need to have had at least 1,000 unique visitors (not page views).

3. Are you getting targeted traffic?

If you’ve had 1,000+ visitors to your website and you still haven’t made a sale, find out where your visitor traffic is coming from.

The best way to get top-quality traffic to your site is by bidding on extremely targeted keywords for your pay-per-click (PPC) ads. (By “targeted,” I mean keywords that speak directly to the people who are most likely to buy your product.)

If you drive 1,000 visitors to your site – using targeted keywords in your PPC ads – and you still don’t make a sale, then you know the problem isn’t the quality of the traffic you’re getting.

It’s your website.

So let’s take a look at that next …

4. Is your headline effective?

If the page you’re driving traffic to with your PPC ad doesn’t have a compelling headline that clearly communicates a powerful benefit, your potential customers aren’t going to stick around for your offer.

Writing a better headline is typically the easiest way to fix a floundering website. If you get more people to stay on your site and read your offer, more people will buy your product.

5. Are you distracting your visitors from your main sales message?

You need to get rid of everything that doesn’t keep your visitors focused on your main offer. This includes links to other websites, Google AdSense ads, banner ads for other products, free articles that don’t support the sale … the list goes on.

6. Are you using testimonials effectively?

Testimonials are one of your most powerful selling tools. Nothing says “Buy it now!” like an unbiased third-party recommendation.

If you don’t yet have any testimonials, give your product to a few friends and ask them to provide you with testimonials on how well it worked for them.

7. Does your guarantee take away the risk of buying?

A good guarantee is essential – especially when you’re selling on the Internet.

Unless you’re a major brand that your customers already trust (like Sony, Wal-Mart, Pepsi), you need to let them know you’ll stand behind your product. So reassure them that if they’re not 100 percent satisfied, they can send it right back for a full refund. And remember, a longer guarantee usually results in more sales – and fewer refunds.

8. Is your price too high? Or too low?

Most people know that if you price your product too high, you’ll hurt your sales. But this can also be true if your price is too low.

People get suspicious when the price is far below what they were expecting. They think it’s probably “too good to be true” – and, as a result, they don’t feel confident making a purchase.

9. Is your ordering system easy to use?

Just because you can figure out how to navigate through your ordering process, that doesn’t mean your average customer can.

To make sure your ordering system is “user-friendly,” find a few friends who aren’t very Internet savvy and get them to order your product. Watch over their shoulders and take notes. Where did they get stuck?

Fix whatever problems they encountered – immediately – because your potential customers are encountering them too.

10. Do you have good sales copy?

If you aren’t using well-written sales copy to sell your product, you’ll never achieve online success. It’s that simple. Your product isn’t going to sell itself! You need to have the right words to do the job.

So there they are … the 10 questions I ask whenever I look at a website that’s not turning visitors into sales. Once I’m able to answer “yes” to all 10 questions, I always see a substantial improvement in the site’s conversion rate.

Top 5 Ways To Use Web 2.0 for Web Marketing

Web 2.0 and Web marketing is a match made in heaven. There are many ways to create traffic to your website using the power of Web 2.0. Below I am going to examine what I consider to be the top five.

Jack Humphrey, a well-known Web 2.0 expert, defines it this way in his Authority Black
Book:

Generally speaking, if people can submit links to content, submit content, make comments and vote good/bad content up/down thus affecting the amount of traffic that content can generate, it’s Web 2.0.

Blogs, wikis, file sharing sites, content rating systems, book-marking sites, and social networking sites are all examples of Web 2.0. Some of the more well-known Web 2.0 sites are YouTube (file sharing), Facebook and MySpace (social networking), Wikipedia (wiki), BlinkList (book-marking) and Digg (content rating system). The list is almost endless, and the traffic that these websites generate is absolutely staggering.

So how can you harness some of this traffic?

1) Create original, quality and compelling content and submit them to Web 2.0 websites.
For example, if you write an original and compelling article, you can submit it to content sharing and content rating system websites such as Digg, Propeller, Newsvine MarkTD or Reddit. Sometimes there content sharing and content rating system websites that specializes in a particular industry. MarkTD specializes in marketing, for example.

When you submit your article to these sites, people will give it a vote, and each vote moves the article up where it can be seen by more and more people. This has the potential of creating a lot of traffic for your website since each reader will need to click on the link to go to your site to read the full article. And you’re building a permanent link pointing to your website that can be followed for months and years to come. (And don’t forget, a link from a quality site to your website helps in your search engine rankings too.)

Or you can create an original video and submit it to YouTube. Here it will get rated and possibly seen by many people. If the video contains your website or a plug for your business, then all the better. YouTube is not the only video sharing website however. There are many, and one video can be submitted to them all. This same concept applies to your original images, photographs, digital art and audio files.

2) Web 2.0-ize other people’s sites that contain a link back to your website
I’ll assume you already know how your bookmarks (or Favorites) work in your browser. There are websites that exist that act in the same way, but the bookmarks you set are public. BlinkList and Simpy are two examples of this. People’s public bookmarks are browsed by others and lead to clicks to the sites you’ve bookmarked. So be sure to bookmark your business website and inner pages that are important.

Also, these bookmarks can appear in search results in engines like Google and Yahoo. And some even think that search engines use book-marking sites in their algorithms, although this has not been conclusively proven. Simpy and BlinkList are two more examples of these kinds of Web 2.0 book-marking sites.

Let’s say you write an original, quality article and post it to your business website. Then let’s say you submit the article to a handful of content rating websites like some of the ones explained above. To further market this article, you can then use social book-marking sites to bookmark the page on the content rating websites that list your new article and that contain a link back to your article. This can be very powerful.

Or let’s say you notice that an authority in your industry has a link on its website that points back to your website. Go ahead and bookmark the page on the authority site, thus marketing it, which in turn markets your site as well. One particular Web 2.0 website that is very popular and can generate tons of traffic is StumbleUpon. This site allows people to give any page you deem worthy a “thumbs-up”. And if you get enough “thumbs-up”, people browsing StumbleUpon will see it and click over to that page. So I always make it a point to “Stumble” my business websites’ homepages and sites that contain links to my business websites as well.

If you become an active member in a handful of Web 2.0 websites and utilize these first two suggestions alone, you will be amazed at the kind of traffic you can generate.

3) Engage in the conversations and activities
When I suggest above to become an active member I mean that you need to visit a few of your favorite Web 2.0 sites on a regular basis and actually contribute to the site with your opinions, votes, comments and submissions. For instance, if you like Digg or Newsvine, visit them often and submit quality articles, content and sites to them. And they don’t all have to be your sites.

In fact, the more impartial you are, the more people will trust you when you submit one of your articles. And you ought to vote for other people’s Digg submissions as well. You may enjoy Facebook, Linkedin ro MySpace. First, create a profile on the site, then go out and make connections within the community. The more you do this, the more you can harness the power of the people you meet to help market your website or yourself.

Visit and comment on blogs in your industry. This is another tried and true way to engage in the online conversation. Blogs are Web 2.0 and have been around for a while now. Unfortunately, leaving blog comments has been abused by so many people that you absolutely must only leave blog comments that contribute to the overall blog post.

Only add your website’s link if you’re asked to. These links won’t help your search engine rankings but can drive traffic to your site.

4) Encourage visitors to bookmark and tag your content
If you have a blog, add a feature that shows up at the end of every post that allows users to bookmark or submit your post to other Web 2.0 websites. ‘Share This’ is just such a blog add-on (or plug-in) that can do this for you. If you have a WordPress blog you’ll be able to find a plug-in that allows you to integrate this type of feature (including Share This) into your blog very easily and without the need for any technical knowledge. If you write a memorable or compelling post, people can use this to make bookmarks to the post, Stumble it, Digg it and so forth. All of this can lead to more traffic.

5) Add a Web 2.0 feature to your website
First of all, your business website needs a blog. If you don’t have one, then stop reading this and go to it. A blog enables you and your employees an easy way to post new information that is relevant to your business and helpful to your customers. And it allows your customers to easily communicate with you by leaving comments.

But beyond a blog, what other Web 2.0 features can you add to your website? If you’re selling products, consider adding in a feature that allows customers to rate each product. It can be something as simple as one to five stars or more elaborate where they leave reviews. Amazon does this and it one of the major driving forces in their sales. When potential customers see that your products are rated by existing customers, they’ll be more likely to trust you and buy.

You could add a wiki to your website. A wiki is software that allows users to freely create and edit Web page content. By encouraging your website visitors to create content for you, you’re allowing your site to grow, become more informative and thus creating more chances to be found in search engines. These features can be found as third-party software packages and integrated into your existing website surprisingly easily.

Book Review – the Ultimate Web Marketing Strategy by Ed Rivis

The phrase has been used before, but if you have a website you really need to read The Ultimate Web Marketing Strategy, by Ed Rivis.

Ed covers 22 important web strategies you need to know for all websites. Equally important, any brick and mortar company can also use these strategies to their advantage in their existing markets, or use them as they move online.

Every year thousands of new websites come online.

Many companies create pretty websites. And six months later the website owner finds out that ‘pretty’ does not sell.

Slow loading graphics are a real turn off for most people. It only takes a few seconds waiting before a person leaves your site. Fancy graphics are actually a tool to drive people to your competitor’s site.

The Ultimate Web Marketing Strategy is a 200 page book. I got the book when it was pre-released in electronic format for comments. I easily read it over a hectic weekend.

This is a useful resource to have on your desk. That’s why I was one of the first in line when the book came out in hard copy. It is the only book that sits on my desk.

Chapters follow a logical progression, but each chapter is stand alone.

If you already have a solid grasp in Front-End Acquisition and a good idea of Integrated Marketing you might consider skipping the first 2 chapters and only reading the second half of the book. But this is probably foolish. There is a lot of solid content in each chapter.

The second half of the book is about Back-End Marketing, Scientifically Optimizing Sales and the conclusion Putting It All Together.

In the very beginning Ed lists the 13 most common reasons for poor web performance.

If you have:

  • Perfectly targeted traffic
  • THE PERFECT keywords
  • A site that is not pushy
  • A website that radiates trust
  • Rock solid design that is not too flashy and nor too slow.

Then you may not need this book. Of course your website still needs to meet the other 8 factors before you can say that this book is not for you.

Ed is a strong believer in copywriting, so you will read a fair bit about the importance of content. Remember; no graphic heavy and flashy websites. Content is still king.

Your website is like a growth hormone for your business. Most websites do not take the time to go through a good checklist and get everything right. If you don’t work at improving your website through an expert checklist like Ed’s, you can easily drive prospects away from your products and services.

Ed uses images and graphics very clearly to help visualize parts of his book. The graphics are examples of what Ed recommends you use on your website, just where you really need it. He makes his points very clear.

A sneak peak – Ed has another product coming out soon on statistics.

Now you may be like Ed was a while ago and think that stats are not the most exciting subject.

But this is a huge mistake.

If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it, and since most business owners have no idea how their website is doing they may as well be running advertising in a foreign language. The Ultimate Web Marketing Strategy, a must read for any serious internet marketer.
